FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University’s men’s golf team defended its home turf on Monday and Tuesday with a team victory at Fremont Golf Course.
The varsity Warriors finished 1st out of 14 participating teams from nine different schools, finishing at a total of 19-over par after two rounds of golf.
Midland varsity finished three strokes ahead of the Ottawa University varsity team that finished 22-over par. Northeast Community College came home third at 35-over par.
Juniors Mike Myers and Cody Troudt were the highest-finishing Warriors in the event as they tied for 4th place with 145 shots (+3) each after two rounds. Chris Kalpkas from Southeast Community College and Cameron Cross from Ottawa tied atop the individual leaderboard at 143 shots (+1). Kalpkas defeated Cross in a playoff hole on the 10th to claim the title outright.
The rest of the Midland varsity team that captured the team victory included Joe Vest (T-7, +6), Kean Kontor (T-12, +8), and Luke Janning (T-16, +10).
Two other Warriors finished in the top 20 as B-team member Ryan Rogers tied Janning for 16th at 10-over par, while D-team member Sam Elgert was right behind them, finishing 18th at 11-over par.
With the weather beginning to be more suitable for golf, the Warriors will spending more time outside preparing for the second round of the GPAC Qualifier that takes place on April 23 and 24 in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota.
Before the GPAC event, the Warriors will play next on April 2 and 3 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Blue River Classic. Tuesday’s start time at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course is set for 11:00 a.m., and Wednesday’s start time at Highlands Golf Course is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
