ALEXANDRIA, La. – Midland University opened up their 2019 baseball season with a five-game road trip to Alexandria, Louisiana over the weekend. The Warriors took on Champion Christian College in Saturday doubleheader and then played Louisiana State University-Alexandria in a Sunday doubleheader followed by a single game on Monday before heading home. Midland defeated Champion 6-3 and 16-0 before falling 4-1, 5-2, and 17-1 to LSU-Alexandria.
Luke Egging and James Scurto picked up the wins for Midland against Champion Christian on Saturday. Egging came on in relief and pitched 3.0 innings allowing 3 hits, no runs, and struck out 4 batters. Scurto started game two and went 3.1 innings while allowing no runs with 3 strikeouts.
Bryan Smith went 5 for 12 over the weekend with a pair of walks. He scored 3 runs and also stole a base. In the fourth game of the weekend, he came on to pitch in relief and went 3.2 innings allowing 3 hits and no runs.
Another standout performance came from Edgar Gallardo, who had a pair of hits and was also walked once. He stole three bases and scored two runs.
Newcomers Jack Barrios and Anthony Hamilton both did some nice things as well. After sitting out in the opener, Barrios registered a hit in each of the next four games. He was a combined 6-13 with 5 RBI and one homerun. Hamilton had a standout game in the second versus Champion Christian. He was 1-2 at the plate and also earned a pair of walks. He score 3 runs as well.
Midland (2-3) will be back in action this upcoming weekend as they travel to Springfield, Missouri for a set of neutral site games. They’ll face MidAmerica Nazarene (0-1) and William Penn (6-0) on Saturday at Joe Becker Stadium. On Sunday the Warriors will take on Waldorf (0-0) and Culver-Stockton (0-3) at Joplin High School.
