No. 9 Midland Earns First Victory of Season Over Arizona Christian

COSTA MESA, Calif. – No. 9 Midland University picked up their first win of the year with a 2-0 shutout against Arizona Christian on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors improve to 1-1-1 on the year while the Firestorm fall to 2-2.

The Warriors wasted no time as their first shot of the game resulted in a goal to put them up 1-0 in the fifth minute. The goal came from Nayeli Rodriguez, her second of the year, and was assisted by Kerryn Stigar. The Warriors defense proved to be solid as Arizona Christian’s attempts could not find the back of the net. The Firestorm would put together three shots in as many minutes before a save from Warriors goalkeeper Rachel Thigpen ended the threat.

A late corner kick for the Warriors set up a shot for Marley Farrell in the 44th minute, but the shot would go wide as Midland carried a 1-0 lead going into the break. Arizona Christian collected 12 shots in the half (four on goal) compared to four shots for Midland.

The Warriors came out firing in the second half with two early opportunities from Rodriguez. Journee McDowell would follow up with a shot of her own that just missed and hit the crossbar in the 54th minute. Rodriguez would find success in the 81st minute as her third goal of the year gave Midland the 2-0 lead. The late goal would put the nail in the coffin as Arizona Christian could not find offensive rhythm in the final minutes.

Midland outshot the Firestorm six to five in the second half, and goalkeeper Thigpen recorded seven saves in the shutout.

“We leave California knowing what we need to do to improve on as we get ready for the difficult road ahead,” commented head coach Greg Jarosik. “There are several tweaks we will make and to get ourselves prepared for a very difficult Missouri Valley team next week.”

The Lady Warriors (1-1-1) are back in action on September 7 as they hit the road to face Missouri Valley (3-0-1) at 1:30 p.m. in Marshall, Missouri.
