Local golf notes: Updates on rules, courses and flooding, plus Youth on Course and First Tee

From the revised rulebook to kid programs, there’s plenty to talk about in this new season of Midlands golf.

The season is finally getting off the ground, too, after a late winter of record snow and flooding in parts of Nebraska and Iowa.

Rules of Golf

A much smaller set of Rules of Golf took effect this year. TV viewers already have seen some of the changes in pro events, such as putting with the flagstick in the hole.

Many of the revisions are aimed to simplify, such as standardizing penalties and relief situations, and to speed play.

From a Nebraska Golf Association handout on explanations of 25 major rules changes, here are some of the most notable:

Ready golf is encouraged, in both stroke and match play, when it’s safe to do.

Only three minutes to search for a ball, instead of five.

The flagstick can be left in when putting.

Spike marks now are included in what can be repaired on the green. Aeration holes are not.

No penalty for a ball accidentally moved on the green. If it had been lifted and replaced before moving, it must return to the original spot.

Loose impediments may be removed from a bunker, but testing the sand or grounding the club in the bunker are still prohibited.

No penalty for an accidental double hit.

Water hazards and tall native grass areas are combined in the category of penalty areas. Most will be red penalty areas, which provide lateral relief, with tournament committees able to mark all penalty areas as such.

Dropping the ball will be from knee height.

Long putters no longer can be used to define a club length in getting relief.

A golf club damaged during a round — even out of anger — may be used and/or repaired, but cannot be replaced.

Distance measuring devices are allowed unless prohibited by a tournament committee.

Course updates

Two years out from its second U.S. Senior Open, Omaha Country Club has lengthened the tournament’s par-4 17th hole by adding new tees behind the par-4 13th and the course is expected to check in at just short of 7,000 yards for its tournament par of 70.

Shadow Ridge has completed its 18-hole renovation that notably changes the shape of the greens on the par-5 12th and par-3 17th holes along with bunkering throughout the course.

Champions Run is nearly at the end of its bunker updates, with par-4 holes 13 and 14 the last to be finished. The club also has added a splash park and redid its fitness center.

The Field Club of Omaha is considering a master improvement plan for the city’s oldest course — opened in 1901 — and the club’s other amenities. It could include the closing of Woolworth Avenue through the golf course, according to the club’s webpage. If the road stays open, the course could be re-routed by eliminating its two par-5 holes and reducing the number of street crossings.

Flooding updates

More than one dozen courses in Nebraska and western Iowa were flooded in March, with the aftermath the greatest at Quail Run in Columbus, Niobrara Valley in Niobrara and Oakland Golf Club in Nebraska and The Wilds RV Golf Resort near Bartlett, Iowa, along Interstate 29.

Quail Run is back in operation with nine holes. Its practice and nursery greens are being used for par-3 holes to go with the seven holes north of the Loup River levee. South of the levee, the holes are unusable because of huge ice chunks slow to melt. Flood waters dragged them across the 11 holes on that side of the course.

Oakland is getting back up to speed after all 18 holes were flooded for the second time in less than a year. Course pro Nick Onken said the back nine is open for member and public play but the front nine will be restricted to members only while repairs are made to four holes.

Youth on Course

The Nebraska Golf Association is incorporating its FORE! junior access program into Youth on Course, which is similar in scope but has spread from Northern California to nearly 30 areas nationally. More than 30 Nebraska courses are participating.

Youth on Course members in Nebraska (ages 6 to 18) will now be able to play year-round for $5 or less during designated times and take their cards to any YOC region.

To join, there is a $10 online registration fee and a short online curriculum course must be completed to be “course ready.” A membership card mailed from the NGA will let the youth receive the YOC greens fee at the participating course.

There is no limit to how often members can play using their Youth on Course card .

First Tee

The First Tee of Omaha youth program is crossing county lines to expand its summer offerings. Sessions will be offered at Platteview Country Club and Papillion’s Eagle Hills municipal course.

Omaha’s First Tee program started in 1990 as Hogan’s Junior Golf Heroes at then-named Miller Park by Steve Hogan, the state’s first black PGA Professional. The nine-hole course is now named for Hogan, who died in 2008 at age 55.

Current First Tee executive director Jeff Porter said, counting programs during the school year, about 3,500 youths ages 5 to 18 will take part this year. Other summer sites are Spring Lake Park and Pacific Springs.
