LINCOLN — A complete-game six-hitter by Minnesota pitcher Sydney Smith helped power the No. 18-ranked Gophers to an 8-3 Big Ten Conference softball victory Saturday over Nebraska.
All six of Nebraska’s hits came in the final two innings as Smith spun a no-hitter for five innings against the Huskers (15-26, 4-10). Nebraska had just one extra base hit, a double by Tristen Edwards in the bottom of the sixth.
The 31-10 Gophers (12-1 Big Ten) scored once in the third inning, thanks in part to one of Nebraska’s two errors, before plating five runs in the fourth inning. The big hit was a three-RBI triple by Maddie Houlihan.
Nebraska and Minnesota will close out the three-game series Sunday at Bowlin Stadium with first pitch scheduled for noon. The game is scheduled to be televised by BTN.
